The Best Way to Grow in Trusting God as a Single Mom is to Understand Who God Really Is
There are many misconceptions about who God actually is. As Christians, we must make it our top priority to learn the truth about God.
John 17:3 NIV Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
It is hard to trust someone you do not know. As we grow in our faith, we grow in our knowledge of God, not only in our minds, but also relationally in our hearts. When you truly understand who God is, your ability and willingness to sincerely trust in Him will grow.
How do we get to know who God really is?
God tells us who He is in the pages of Scripture. This does not mean that we do not see or experience God working in our lives -we do! However, on this side of eternity, we live in a world marred by sin. The presence of sin can lead to inaccuracy in our perceptions and experiences. By knowing what God says about Himself in the Bible, we can more accurately discern our experiences and have a clearer perception of reality as God defines it. Additionally, we can detect and resist lies and deceit. Lies and misunderstandings about God cause us to mistrust Him and to feel insecure.
Here, I will share three practical tips on how you can grow in trusting God as a single mom by getting to know Him:
1) Read the Bible to Grow in Trusting God
Many single mothers initially find this very difficult.
God will help you make the time….He has done it for me in miraculous ways!
Tips on how to read the Bible with a “busy mom schedule”:
Listen to an audio version of the Bible. Choose to prioritize learning about God instead of listening to music or a podcast. You will probably find that you still have time for both :)
Get up earlier. For me, this has been life-changing! Even when it’s hard…remember why you are getting up early. It is for the greater thing…to know more about God while growing closer to Him. It is 100% worth it.
If you do not have a lot of experience reading the Bible or it’s been a little while, consider starting with the Gospel of John.
Look up Bible passages that talk about God’s character: His mercy, kindness, justice, compassion, etc. Meditate on these passages and consider how you have seen these attributes of God in your own life.
Consider listening to or reading a “Bible in a Year” plan.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When reading Bible passages, read the full context (everything surrounding the verses you are interested in), not just a verse or two. It is critical to understand what is happening in the setting of the verse(s) you are reading. Not reading things in context is a dangerous habit that leads to misunderstandings that can negatively impact how you view God and how you respond to Him-including in areas of trust.
Tip on reading in context: Can you answer the who, what, when, why, and where about the passage you are reading?
2) Join a Bible Study at Your Local Church Fellowship or Online
As Christians, we encourage, correct, and learn from one another. Fellowship as we study the Bible is a blessing that supports our growth in the grace and knowledge of God!
Tips on How to Join a Bible Study as a Single Mom:
Depending on your season of motherhood, some time is way better than none at all. Do the best you can!
Child care concerns
Some churches offer child care, or you may need to make arrangements with a friend, family member, or trusted church member to watch your kid(s). Do not be afraid to ask for help with this from people who care about you.
If you are joining an online group and your kids are around, you can turn your camera and mic off if necessary-get as much in as you can. Most online groups understand this.
If you work during the day, you may need to choose a lunch break once a week to dedicate to an online Bible study or in person if there is a study available near your workplace. Trust me-I know you need the break. This is a different kind of rest, and it is truly satisfying.
If you share custody with your child’s father, attend a Bible Study on a day your kid(s) are with their dad.

3) Pay Attention to the Evidence of God’s Work in Your Life
Sometimes, everyday concerns can become so overwhelming that the evidence of God’s presence in our lives evades us.
Tips on Paying Attention to the Evidence of God Working in Our Lives as Single Moms:
Acknowledge answered prayer. Praying about everything is a sweet comfort to a single mom who feels like there is an insurmountable amount of responsibility on her plate. As you pray, keep track of what you pray about. I recommend keeping a journal. It reinforces that what God says about Himself is, in fact, true! He hears you, sees you, and cares. As you note and cherish these truths in your life, it gets easier to trust Him. You see that God’s promises are more than just words on a page! They are real.
Do not take answered prayer for granted! Thank God when you experience answered prayer, and be patient when you feel like He is silent. If you have trouble being patient, be honest and ask God to help you develop this virtue.
Take time to notice God’s creation. Listen to the wind, water, and sounds of nature. Remember, God has control over them! This can be a reminder of God’s power and sovereignty when we feel like things are out of control.
Intentionally seek opportunities to connect God’s real character (who He is and what He says about Himself in the Bible) to your own situations and experiences.
Listen to the testimonies of other Christians and see God’s work in their lives.
