The First Step in Making Time for God as a Single Mom
God knows how busy you are…
Sometimes knowing what to prioritize as a single mom can be a serious struggle (trust me, I know!)
Thankfully, the Lord has given us clear instructions as to what matters MOST regarding our time.
The FIRST step in Making Time for God is to Choose to Trust Biblical Truth
God has defined your top priority: seeking Him first. We see this in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
You can choose to make seeking God a priority.
When you choose to seek God first, He will sustain you
An Example of Jesus’ Response When We Seek Him First
I know many of us may have heard the “Martha and Mary talk” before. PLEASE don’t assume you know where I am going with this and read on…
Jesus explains what our top priority should be in His interaction with Martha and Mary:
Luke 10:38-42
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (emphasis in bold is mine)
What comes first when we feel overwhelmed? Seek Jesus and learn from Him.
I know-it sounds simple…But I think most of us are aware of how difficult actually living this out can be.
Difficult or not, the truth is we can live it out. We do have a choice.
By making decisions that reflect Biblical truth and not our chaotic thoughts, we can begin the process of really trusting God and His priorities regarding our time.
Key Points in Taking the First Step to Make Time for God as a Single Mom
1) Knowing Our Priority
Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to Him teach. For us, this may be time praying, reading and/or studying the Bible, singing songs that accurately express the Gospel and/or God’s character, etc.
2) Recognize We Have a Choice
Mary chose to listen to Jesus’ teaching.
Jesus made it clear that Mary’s choice to sit at His feet was the one thing necessary.
3) Know God’s Response When We Choose Him First
When I read Jesus’ words, “but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” I cannot help but think of His instruction in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Both passages convey God’s will for you to seek Him first in your life, as well as His promise to address your needs and sustain you when you do.
Start Here If You Want to Make Time for God in Your Life
1) Ask Yourself, “Do I believe this?”
I mean, really believe it...as in a working belief that is lived out; not just an aspiration.
Pray and confess that you are struggling with belief, and ask God for help if you discover one or both of the following:
You don’t really believe that God promises He “will not take away the most important thing” (seeking Him).
You struggle to believe that He will actually add the things you need to your life if you choose to put seeking Him first.
2) Take Action Steps Toward Making Time for God
Some ideas…
Dedicated time in prayer (I suggest first thing in the morning)
Setting aside time to read and study the Bible (click here for tips)
Pray about everything, acknowledging God in all of your concerns and decisions
Conclusion
Making time for God in your life as a Christian single mother may seem impossible, BUT with God, all things are possible, and He has promised not to take it away.
His will, as written in Scripture, is for you to seek Him first. You can trust that He will make a way.
