How to Trust in God by Getting to Know Him

#1 Priority When Seeking to Trust God More as a Single Mom
Learn What God Says About Himself and Who He Is
Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3 NIV
It is hard to trust someone you do not know. This is why getting to know who God actually is, is of supreme importance. Getting to know God is a process. As we grow in our faith we grow in our knowledge of God-not just as an understanding in our minds, but relationally in our hearts. There are many misconceptions about who God is. We must make getting to know the truth about God top priority. How can we get to know God?
#1 Read the Bible
Many single mothers initially find this very difficult.
Remember Mary? God will help you make the time….He has done it for me in miraculous ways!
Tips on how to do this with a busy schedule:
Listen to an audio version of the Bible. Choose to prioritize learning about God instead of listening to music or a podcast. You will probably find that you still have time for both 😉
Get up earlier. For me, this has been life changing in the best way. Even when it’s hard…remember why you are getting up. It is for the greater thing…to know more about God while growing closer to Him. It is 100% worth it.
If you do not have a lot of experience reading the Bible or its been a little while, consider starting with the Gospel of John.
Look up passages that talk about God’s character. You can easily search this out on Google.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Read the full context (everything surrounding the verses you are interested in), not just a verse or two. Knowing the full context of what is happening in any given Bible passage is critical. Pulling verses out of context is a dangerous habit that can lead to misunderstandings in the long run.
Tip on reading in context: Can you answer the who, what, when, why and where about the passage you are reading?
#2 Consider joining a Bible Study at your local church fellowship or online.
Being in fellowship with other believers as a single mother is a key component to growing in the knowledge of God. As Christians, we encourage, correct and learn from one another. Fellowship in Bible study may also lead to relationships that can help you hear and see God’s work in the lives of His people. This is a blessing! It helps us to see that God is alive. He cares about us and is actively involved in our everyday lives.

Child care concerns
Some churches offer child care, or you may need to make arrangements with a trusted friend or family member to watch your kid(s).
If you are joining an online group, you can turn your camera and mic off if needed-get as much in as you can. Most online groups understand this.
If you work during the day, you may need to choose a lunch break once a week to dedicate to Bible study. Trust me-I know you need the break. This is a different kind of rest and it is truly satisfying.
If you share custody with your child’s father, attend a Bible Study on a day your kid(s) are with their dad.
Depending on your season of motherhood, some time is way better than none at all. Do the best you can. If you have church members in your life whom you feel comfortable with, let them know that you would like to attend Bible study and need some support regarding childcare…you may be surprised at the help that might be offered.
#3 Pay Attention to the Evidence. God is who He says He is. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our everyday concerns that we miss out on the evidence that this is true!
Acknowledge answered prayer. We will talk more about prayer in the next post. For now, know that praying about everything is a sweet comfort to a single mom who is alone with what seems like an insurmountable amount of responsibility on her plate. As you pray, try and keep track of what you pray about. I keep a journal and recommend that but do what works best for your situation and personality.
Whatever you do, do not take answered prayer for granted! It reinforces that what God says about Himself is in fact, true! He hears you, sees you and cares. As you note and cherish these truths in your life, it gets easier to trust Him. You see that God’s promises are more than just words on a page! They are real.
Take time to notice God’s creation. Listen to the wind and or the waves (if you have them nearby). Remember, God has control over them!
Intentionally seek opportunities to connect God’s character (who He and what He says about Himself) to situations and experiences.
Listen to the testimonies of other Christians and see God’s work in their lives.
